Stability analysis for stochastic hybrid systems: A survey

2014

This survey addresses stability analysis for stochastic hybrid systems (SHS), which are dynamical systems that combine continuous change and instantaneous change and that also include random effects. We re-emphasize the common features found in most of the models that have appeared in the literature, which include stochastic switched systems, Markov jump systems, impulsive stochastic systems, switching diffusions, stochastic impulsive systems driven by renewal processes, diffusions driven by Lévy processes, piecewise-deterministic Markov processes, general stochastic hybrid systems, and stochastic hybrid inclusions. Then we review many of the stability concepts that have been studied, inclu…

Slope units-based flow susceptibility model: using validation tests to select controlling factors

2011

A susceptibility map for an area, which is representative in terms of both geologic setting and slope instability phenomena of large sectors of the Sicilian Apennines, was produced using slope units and a multiparametric univariate model. The study area, extending for approximately 90 km2, was partitioned into 774 slope units, whose expected landslide occurrence was estimated by averaging seven susceptibility values, determined for the selected controlling factors: lithology, mean slope gradient, stream power index at the foot, mean topographic wetness index and profile curvature, slope unit length, and altitude range. Each of the recognized 490 landslides was represented by its centroid po…

From deterministic cellular automata to coupled map lattices

2016

A general mathematical method is presented for the systematic construction of coupled map lattices (CMLs) out of deterministic cellular automata (CAs). The entire CA rule space is addressed by means of a universal map for CAs that we have recently derived and that is not dependent on any freely adjustable parameters. The CMLs thus constructed are termed real-valued deterministic cellular automata (RDCA) and encompass all deterministic CAs in rule space in the asymptotic limit $\kappa \to 0$ of a continuous parameter $\kappa$. Thus, RDCAs generalize CAs in such a way that they constitute CMLs when $\kappa$ is finite and nonvanishing. In the limit $\kappa \to \infty$ all RDCAs are shown to ex…

Novel Stability Criteria for T--S Fuzzy Systems

2014

In this paper, novel stability conditions for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems are presented. The so-called nonquadratic membership-dependent Lyapunov function is first proposed, which is formulated in a higher order form of both the system states and the normalized membership functions than existing techniques in the literature. Then, new membership-dependent stability conditions are developed by the new Lyapunov function approach. It is shown that the conservativeness of the obtained criteria can be further reduced as the degree of the Lyapunov function increases. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and less conservativeness of the obtained theoretical resul…

Sequestering ability of polyaminopolycarboxylic ligands towards dioxouranium(VI) cation

2006

Abstract In the present paper, some results of an investigation (at t = 25 °C by potentiometry, ISE-H+ glass electrode) on the sequestering ability of five different polyaminopolycarboxylic ligands [Nitrilotriacetate (NTA), ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetate (EDTA), ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetate (EGTA), diethylenetriamine-N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentaacetate (DTPA), triethylenetetraamine-N,N,N′,N″,N′′′,N′′′-hexaacetate (TTHA)] towards dioxouranium(VI) cation in sodium chloride aqueous solutions, at I = 0.7 mol L−1 are reported. Calculations performed on potentiometric data gave evidence of the formation of the following species (log β in parenthesis): UO2(NTA)H0 (12…

Static instability analysis for travelling membranes and plates interacting with axially moving ideal fluid

2010

The out-of-plane instability of a moving plate, travelling between two rollers with constant velocity, is studied, taking into account the mutual interaction between the buckled plate and the surrounding, axially flowing ideal fluid. Transverse displacement of the buckled plate (assumed cylindrical) is described by an integro-differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, the aerodynamic reaction of the external medium, the vertical projection of membrane tension, and the bending force. The aerodynamic reaction is found analytically as a functional of the displacement. To find the critical divergence velocity of the moving plate and its corresponding buckling mode, an eigenvalue…

Is an Increase of the Fiscal Budget at EMU level Desirable?

2005

The birth of the European Monetary Union (EMU) has determined the creation of a common currency, the Euro, but unlike other monetary unions, the EMU does not have a central fiscal authority. The role of fiscal policy is left to the responsibility of the governments of the EMU member States. The new architecture modifies the assignment of the instruments to the objectives, especially those of stabilization. The loss of the sovereignty of monetary policy and exchange rate control by the individual member states has determined the inability to use two important instruments of insurance against the risks of shocks. Moreover, the Treaty of Maastricht and the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) could…

NUMERICAL ALGORITHMS

2013

For many systems of differential equations modeling problems in science and engineering, there are natural splittings of the right hand side into two parts, one non-stiff or mildly stiff, and the other one stiff. For such systems implicit-explicit (IMEX) integration combines an explicit scheme for the non-stiff part with an implicit scheme for the stiff part. In a recent series of papers two of the authors (Sandu and Zhang) have developed IMEX GLMs, a family of implicit-explicit schemes based on general linear methods. It has been shown that, due to their high stage order, IMEX GLMs require no additional coupling order conditions, and are not marred by order reduction. This work develops a …

Sequestration of organometallic compounds by natural organic matter. binding of trimethyltin(IV) by fulvic and alginic acids

2006

The binding capacity of fulvic and alginic acids towards trimethyl tin(IV) cation was quantitatively determined in order to evaluate the sequestering ability of toxic organometallic compounds by natural organic matter. Investigations were performed in the pH range of natural waters (5–8.5) where the carboxylate groups, largely present in both sequestering agents, are the main binding sites. A chemical interaction model, according to which both the protonation of polyelectrolyte ligands and the hydrolysis of the organotin cation in NaCl aqueous solution were considered, was used to define the speciation of the systems under investigation. Measurements performed at different ionic strength va…

Asynchronous L1 control of delayed switched positive systems with mode-dependent average dwell time

2014

Abstract This paper investigates the stability and asynchronous L 1 control problems for a class of switched positive linear systems (SPLSs) with time-varying delays by using the mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) approach. By allowing the co-positive type Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional to increase during the running time of active subsystems, a new stability criterion for the underlying system with MDADT is first derived. Then, the obtained results are extended to study the issue of asynchronous L 1 control, where “asynchronous” means that the switching of the controllers has a lag with respect to that of system modes. Sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee that the resulti…
